Okay, Vlad.
I can understand your concern. However, I wasn't looking for help in the diagnosis, I was looking for advise with the next step. If you need more detail with regards to the sequence of events leading me to concern:
low coolant indication from SID...
indeed low coolant in the overflow tank...
it had been a while since I had checked and so I wasn't concerned...
so, I added coolant...
less than a week later (no, not over night, Vlad, but certainly soon enough) low coolant indication from SID again and indeed low coolant in overflow tank again...
This second indication just happened to be on the day the car was going into WigWam to repair the defective heater box. (Thank you Saab for covering that for me.) So, I asked them to track down the coolant leak. I had not experienced the typical sweet smell that comes with burning coolant, nor did I have any visible smoke or sweet smell out of the exhaust. I did not appear to be losinig compression as the car performed no differently than when I purchased it (about the only drivability issue that I could think would relate). The fact that I had lost an entire overflow tank's worth of antifreeze was curious, though. The car does not run hot and never has, so no worries about the thermostat, etc.
As far as your retorque suggestion yes, I suppose it's a possibility, but I think the Dean has a good point about just how good a solution this would be. Also, to be quite honest, if I can get Saab to do it for me, then they should probably do what the dealer would have had me doing...let them pay $880. I find it a little suspect that this seems to be what had been recommended to people under warranty, but not to me. ...but again, if I can get THEM to pay for it, then I'd definitely like to have a nice new head gasket.
Thanks for the concern, Vlad. I hope this satisfies your curiosity.
