Aside from switching to a watercooled power plant (which is a discussion of it's own), the 996 is gigantic. I see a future coming in which there is no 911. The 911 has evolved into this gargantuan thing, and has lost it's roots as a small, nimble sports car. It has grown into a GT car. Porsche is already hinting at a Boxster coupe. If the Boxster coupe is released, it will more resemble the foundation which the 911 was inspired by, and, for that matter, the 986 coupe will follow the vision that Dr. Ferry Porsche had all those years ago. Sales on this new coupe will rise, and the now grossly over-weight 911 will fade away into the GT Heaven along with the 928 and other European touring coupes.
I hope I'm wrong.
Cheers,
Brian.
