I'm assuming that the '03 manual says 90 is "recommended"? Generally, you don't get any benefit by using a higher-than-recommended octane. Getting as close to recommended as possible should be the goal. If your area offers only 89 or 93, go with the 89. You should be able to use 87 without problems, but the car won't perform as intended (or even, perhaps, as *expected* by the purchaser).
My dealer made this mistake on our 9-3. When we took it out for a test drive, it needed gas. We drove it across the street & the "salesman" (I'm being gracious here) put in their usual filling of 85 (the "regular" around here; "plus" is 87 & "premium" is 91) & we drove it around. It didn't knock or ping for the short time we drove it, but it wasn't the smartest sales technique to reduce the engine's performance for test drives.
