Min vs recommended vs Trionic 8 and APC.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Octane Rating, Jeff F, Sat, 15 Feb 2003 08:16:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The way a normally aspirated non-turbo car requires octane is not the same as a turbo Saab. As I understand it, you can use any grade of gas down to 87 (around sea level), but you will gain performance/boost with 91. Many posters claim better mileage with higher octane, others say it's the other way, lower octane equals less boost and better mileage. I believe the former, higher octane produces better mileage. That seems to be the case in my '96 900SE according to my SID. And I definitely can feel more power and higher indicated boost when I run 91 in the car vs my wife going with 87.
All Saab turbos since the early 80's incorporate "APC", automatic performace control, which means more power with better gas, but the abitlity to use regular and not premium if that's your preference.
That's different from a high compression normally asprirated engine that might detonate on lower octain fuel. As every engine has knock sensors lately, you might not be hurting anything with lower grade fuel, but the advertised horsepower will be produced only with the recommended or required fuel grade. That's kinda' the same logic as APC, but there is definitely a lower compression ratio in a turbo.
One little wrinkle about a 9-3SE 205hp HOT engine and 87 octane is that if you buy gas at altitude, say Denver, the regular is only 85 octane, so you must buy midgrade 87 to fulfil the minimum. Is that true of a 9-3SS too? Or is a 9-3SS not a HOT turbo?
