I am an engineer, and Lutfisk is right.
The result of that in terms of what you feel is that torque gives you the pressed-into-the-back-of-your-seat feeling, while horsepower controls things like 0-60 times and top speeds.
To take an example, to get quick 0-60, you need to be pressed into your seat for the whole ride. Upshifting reduces torque to your wheels, so to get the strongest acceleration, you want to be in lower gears. At high speeds in lower gears, you will be at high rpm, so you need high torque at high rpm. Going back to Lutfisk's equation, that means high horsepower. Of course, if you also have high torque at low rpm, you'll get a quicker jump off the line, so something like a 0-20 time really doesn't depend on horsepower as much as it does on low-end torque. If torque falls off at higher rpms, you'll have to upshift sooner, and you'll get to 60 slower. The equation shows that your horsepower will also be lower.
Low end torque, which Saabs have, is good for low-rpm applications like towing another car out of a ditch (seen Ford pickup commercials stressing low-end torque?) and passing on the highway without having to downshift (which Saab advertises frequently).
The Acura will require you to downshift to pass at highway speeds, but it will have lots of juice once you do.
