Don't the dealers get at least partially reimbursed for factory warranty work? I'm pretty sure that's the case. The profit margin on non-warranty work is most likely much higher since the factory doesn't want the dealer making a huge profit on warranty work.
I like my dealer. The Viggen door sill on my car was loose because the clips holding it down were broken (by me hastily trying to smack it back in place) and I had lost the nut cap over one of the windshield wipers. I went one Saturday to purchase these parts and the parts salesman went and got the service manager and got him to pay for the parts for me since the car is still under warranty. I "installed" these parts myself in the parking lot. While this only saved me roughly $10, it was a very nice gesture. Then again they made a bundle recently selling me the BBS wheel package AND the labor involved in removing the Michelins and mounting my S03's.
