Defeating the boost limiter - anybody know how?

Hello all!
I drive a 2000 Viggen and went it came out Saab said that they had a boost limiter in the first two gears to preserve the tranny and CV joint, but also to keep some kind of civility in the car.
How does the car "know" in which gear it is? Is it a position sensor somewhere on the gear linkage or is it determined by the ECU from a road speed VS engine speed calculation? If possible, I'd like to try to defeat it, just to see what would happen - and also to have better runs at the local dragstrip! I would not intend on driving long with it disengaged, but I'm curious. I do not worry about OBD code generation, since the car is out of warranty.
I also heard from a Saab technician that it is possible to raise the boost pressure by screwing (or unscrewing) the wastegate actuator by a few turns (I was told 5 turns max, since 6 would result in the wastegate "sticking" open, causing all boost to be lost). Any thruth to that? I may have the technical details wrong (it has been a long time since I talked with the guy), so if I'm mistaken, I'd like a heads up!
Any help with these would be appreciated.
Finally, here is a little site of someone unafraid to ding his Viggen. Don't know if it ever was posted, but here goes:
