I have two Saabs one is an auto and the other is a manual (same years and models). The manual is a bit quicker off the line than the auto in sport mode. But when we take trips that involve a lot of stop and go driving the auto is great. For example, last weekend we were coming from Montreal back to Massachusetts and there was a several mile backup at customs, because of the elevated threatcon. I was very happy that I had the auto. We have friends of ours that have two manual transmission cars, last winter one of them broke a leg skiing and they had to rent an automatic car.
All in all I am very happy with our decision. If you have to have one car I think that an automatic is the best choice. On the other hand, if you already have a car with an automatic transmission, go for the manual. My wife was the same as yours but with a little patience she learned how to drive a stick and now she drive the manual most of the time.
