Jeremy,
Actually, I read that the output from the changer isn't limited by the FCC conventions for FM frequency because it's not actually broadcasting a signal. It was in someone's comment about the particular Sony CD changer on epinions.com (so I'm not saying that I'm positive about its validity), but they seemed to think that the quality of FM radio signals poorer because of "clipping" the high and low end of the transmission before the signal is sent (to conform to FCC regulations). They explained that the direct connection to the unit is not limited by these standards and is higher quality because of it. I'm not saying it would 100% rival the quality of a line in feed -- but look at our cars and head units. No factory line in, unfortunately.
Plus, I'm on the very edge of the Boston radio market, where it seems like everyone and their mother has some sort of jazz or classical station in the high FM 80s and low FM 90s -- prime real estate for FM modulators. The antenna feed blocks out this half-signal garbage and allows a feed that, as you say, won't be subject to interference.
If you know more about the FM modulators than the poster on epinions.com, please share it with us! But I'm inclined to agree with his reasoning.
