Base '99 9-3. I pulled the 3.5s in the dash, and installed a set of Infinity Reference 605cs components (6.5" in the front doors, 1" in the dash). 2-channel amp inside the spare tire. Bought an 8-pin DIN connector and made myself a cable to run from the head unit to the amp, and also ran power from the battery (12ga with a 30-amp fuse), then speaker wire back up to the passenger kickpanel where I mounted the crossovers. From there, I used the stock wiring to get to the door speakers, and put in my own wiring to get to the tweeters. Ground is currently going to the bolt that holds the tie-down ring in the right rear corner of the trunk. If anyone is interested, I can write up a detailed description with pictures or whatever (but you might have to beg to find out how I got the wires into the spare tire area without cutting anything and with nothing showing...nah, just kidding!).
The verdict...The sound is incredibly better. No more muddled midrange and lacking highs and lows. Everything is clear and balanced.
The questions...1) there is a soft hissing sound coming from the tweeters. It does not go away when I mute the audio, but it does go away if I turn down the treble control on the head unit. The first symptom suggests to me that it is in the wiring or the amp, but the second tells me it must be in the head unit. I'm confused. Someone help me :)
2) There is a loud pop every time I shut off the head unit. Amp discharging? Is my ground not good enough? I could run a ground wire back up to (whatI assume are) the grounding points under the trim just in front of the front passenger door. Is there too much capacitance in my "amp on" signal wire, causing the amp to turn off too late (there is also a delay to the front speakers starting when I turn on the head unit)? Other ideas?
Even with the problems above, this is a huge difference from the stock system. I'm thrilled with it.
