My head unit looks like the typical 9-3 Pioneer unit, with the DIN on the back and not the side. Does yours look like the old 900 unit?
The hiss seems to be generated before the volume, treble, fader, and balance controls on the head unit, so adjusting either the volume knob or the amp gain amplifies the hiss...the end result is that no matter what combination of gains I use, to get the same volume from the speakers, I have the same amount of hiss. I'm guessing that the stock speakers just didn't have enough range to reproduce the hiss, and that's why I didn't hear it before.
It's quiet, so it's not a terrible problem. The CD I was initially using to test it is one I burned that has particularly low signal levels, so I have to turn the volume way up. With most music, it's not noticeable unless you really listen closely. It is present with both CD and radio input sources, though.
I'm pretty happy with the setup now. I closed everything back up yesterday, and now I'm just playing with bass and treble settings. I've got both set below the midpoint, because I think the middle gets overwhelmed a bit. Would be nice to get a bit more low bass boost, though; I may exchange the amp for one with a bass booster, so I can keep the midbass down but still have the real lows.
