... so I just did a deal to buy a 1999 model.

I'm really excited, but at the same time I'm thinking, "Dave. You're too old to drive a Viggen!"

I do a lot of highway driving, and I thought that the Aero would be a much better high speed cruiser than my NG900. I like both the 5 speed and the automatic. The Saab dealer in Houston wants a lot of money, so I've been watching the ads here on Saabnet and elsewhere.

A few days ago I was reading the TSN 9-3 ads, and came across the one for a Viggen selling on eBay auction. The car is a 1999 with 89,xxx miles. The bottom end of the engine has just been rebuilt on extended warranty, and a new clutch put in for good measure.

The ad intrigued me, so I talked with the owner. He's selling it because his wife just had twins. He said one child seat fit fine, but he couldn't fit three. He sounded like he babied the car, and he added some expensive options, like HID headlights and the Remus exhaust.

I talked to the shop that took care it for him, and they said he was very meticulous about caring for the car. When they re-did the engine they put in brand new crank, rods, bearings, pistons, and oil pump. They put in a new clutch, and did the 90K service. They checked the turbo, and it was perfect. Brakes and tires are recent.

Carfax says the car was first registered in mid-2000, so it's not quite three and a half years old. It has two months or ten thousand miles left on the extended warranty.

My intellect kept telling me, "Dave, you really would be happier in an Aero." But my gut was telling me, "Man, that Viggen would be a blast!" So I decided to make a bid.

And I won the auction at the (reduced) reserve price of $12,000. A good price, I think.

I'm flying to Fort Lauderdale this weekend to pick it up.

I welcome any comments telling me that I got a good deal or that I'm quite clever. If your comment is that you would never buy a car from eBay, or one that had had engine problems, please wait until after I drive the car home.

Best regards,

Dave
