Installed ckpaden's steering rack clamp this morning - thought I'd pass on some feedback to the group.

Install was pretty straightforward. The lower nut is kind of a pain in the ass to get at, but I've seen much worse on my C900. Start to finish it took me around 20-30min. Most of this time was spent getting the old clamp off, particularly the big rubber donut, which I wanted to be careful not to destroy in removal. There are fluid lines in the area you need to be aware/careful of as well.

Other trick was maneuvering the flat plate part of the new clamp into place... came in from the bottom, getting the lower hole over the stud, then sliding into place on top. The rubber pad didn't stick to the clamp very well, and had to be adjusted into place.

Once I reassembled everything (note that the bottom stud will not protrude from the nut as much as original, because the new clamp is thicker), I went out for a quick test drive.

First impression is a decent improvement in steering response, sharpness, and general road feel. The wheel feels a little "heavier" (i.e. more effort to turn it, esp sharp turns at speed), but it's not detrimental. I feel more connected to the road, like in my C900 (though still not as good as the C900).

I didn't really drive too hard, but I noticed slight reduction of torque steer characteristics and general unsteadyness in hard cornering and U-turning, especially while applying throttle. As time goes on, I will test this out more, and see if the TCS threshold is raised.

I noticed no improvement in the understeer characteristics of the car (didn't expect to). It will still plow pretty bad if you hit a sharp corner too fast. My next step will be rear sway bar to try and address this issue.

I'm a little concerned about the new bright red part under the hood, and whether it will attract the dealer's attention when in for service. My car has another 77k of warranty left, and I don't want to compromise it. I guess I'll keep the old part around, though it would be a big pain to reinstall it (getting the rubber donut back on would be non-trivial).

Further impressions as time goes on. Haven't hit the freeway yet to see how high speed handling is affected.

Cheers,

'Roo
