Besides attempting to change the DIC on the side of the road or wherever, it is not essential to change the plugs. Also, the old 9000s had DICs which if not kept upright, had the propensity to leak oil or lubricant on the plugs which could fould them. Thus the notion that you store a used DIC as a spare par in the hatch is dubious to me. Am I missing something. Also, unless you have the correct screwdrive for the T-7 or T-5, you will have a hell of a time changing the DIC.
I have been driving fast and lost timing belts, had fuel lines clog and lost power in heavy fast moving traffic, you simply react to the flame out christmass tree warning lights and thow it into neutral, hit the hazards and say a little prayer as you start looking for a place to ditch on the shoulder.
I have also lost inboard engine power during a lightning storm/squall on the Chain of Lakes near Orlando and let me tell you, I will take a flame out in traffic to lightning and four foot swells in a swamping open boat anyday. We never had time to be afraid because we were too damn busy bailing like crazy. Talk about a natural high. There is nothing quite like surviving a serious situation to make you appreciate how large a role luck plays in life. As long as you don't panic, how bad is a failed DIC going to be? Better to spend the $400 on life jackets, flares, and a new bilge pump.
The DIC neurosis is in my opinion not entirely rationale. I mean if we were running around the wilds of Africa in a Land Rover, then yes, I would be in favor of carrying a large parts inventory with me but we live in countries with overnight shipping and efficient supply chains such that is makes little sense to carry anything but just-in-time inventory. Let Europarts or Taliefferro carry the cost of stocking parts and when it goes, call them on your cell and order a new one for next day delivery and then call for tow.
The fear of the DIC failure is way overblown. Better to fear a flu pandemic like Spanish Influenza in 1919 that killed over 2 million Americans in a matter of months and spread quickly around the world before air travel was a reality. So worry about that.
