Hey Ed,

After running A-Rx in both C900s' manual trannies & currently in all three Saab engines, I'd definitely go this route first. The tranny cleanings pulled a ton of crud out of the '85, & solved my 5th gear shifting problem in the '90. The engine cleanings are nearly done in both C900s (5,000 mile applications in both) & the acceleration & power has been slightly (but noticeably) improved. The engine cleaning in the 9³ has only been underway for about 800 miles (of a 2,000 mile application), but I don't expect to notice any changes on this car. I can tell you the oil has become completely black on the 9³, where both C900s are more of a dark brown.

If it were my car, I'd buy three bottles, & run each stage with a good, dual-rated (CI-4 & SL) 15W-40. I'd run the initial cleaning for 2,000 miles & change the filter at the 1/2-way point, then run the rinse oil & new filter for 2,000 miles, change this oil & filter & add the 2nd application of A-Rx (or if the oil looks pretty good, just change the filter & add the A-Rx), run this for another 2,000 miles & again change filters at the 1/2-way point, then run the final rinse oil & new filter for 2,000 miles. At that point I'd replace the oil & filter & start using either M1 15W-50 or the new M1 5W-40.

Is all this any easier than dropping the pan? I don't know. If you decide to drop the pan, I'd still suggest running at least a single A-Rx application thru it, just to get the chunks hiding in other areas of the system.
