But Frank (the developer of Auto-Rx) recommends dino for all sludge-specific issues. The reason is due to syn's stronger surface attraction. The esters in his product need to reach the crud in order to do their job, so using a PAO-based or ester-based syn throws up a roadblock for A-Rx. That doesn't mean it won't eventually get the job done, only that it'll take longer to do it (& part of why I'm running longer-than-recommended cleaning applications in all of my Saabs). He's also said that dino oil does a better job of working with A-Rx for the seal conditioning part of it, & he said a good part of that process occurs during the rinse phase.
The reason I suggested "a good, dual-rated (CI-4 & SL) 15W-40," is because these oils are built with turbo-diesels in mind & so they're pretty well beyond what you'd call "regular dino oil." If the idea of using ANY dino oil bothers you as much as it does me, you can either add it to the Saab syn blend you've already got in there (an easy choice, since you just had it changed), or try a Group III syn like Syntec or Shell's Rotella 5W-40 (the Rotella should have a better additive package than the Syntec). Group III syn still has better surface adhesion than dino, but no PAOs or esters to compete with A-Rx.
Buck makes a good argument for pulling the pan, but it sounds like there wasn't anything odd that you noticed when doing the HG job? Any odd appearance to the oil during any of your changes? Maybe a single, long-term application of A-Rx will do the trick. As I progressed thru the 3k mi mark on my '90's application, I noticed that the engine started to sound different than during any of the past 5 yrs I've owned it. It's hard to describe, but it's almost a kind of cymbal-like pitch during higher rpms. But the whole engine runs smoother & quiter now, so maybe I'm starting to hear other sounds that were masked by engine noise previously?
Let me know if you've got any other questions about my A-Rx applications. You can also email me any time you feel like it.
