Hard to get into gear problems are often a case of the clutch not completely releasing from the engine. The clutch plate has to be free to move on the input shaft spline after the pressure plate spring pressure is released (foot on clutch pedal). Sometimes just a small amount of material on the input spline or an adverse tolerance stack up between the clutch disk and spline can cause the clutch to hang up slightly, and still be transmitting a small amount of power to the input shaft even though you have the pedal depressed. This is most evident in reverse and 1st gear and can cause the gear crunching you hear. Try blipping the gas pedal (reving the engine) with the clutch pedal depressed when you have this problem. It may be all that is needed to free the clutch from the engine. If it works, it's a lot easier than taking things apart to free up a sticky clutch.
