Front wheel drive cars are all tricky because you can't feel the front wheels sliding until they really let go. Often the front end stays planted and suddenly the rear snaps around. Once the car starts fishtailing, it is almost impossible to catch. A lot of weight on the front end plus trying to match the speed of the front wheels is very difficult. I am old and dumb enough to have had this experience in several cars of various makes (starting with a 1977 Saab 99 experience that very easily could have been fatal). In contrast, my old Alfa Romeo was easily controlled and was great fun to drift through the bends on snowy days.
You just have to be very careful & aware of how much traction you have. Be happy you are well and unhurt. It happens to the best of us now and then.
