It reportedly involves other makes as well, but we have Saabs and it is now our problem to deal with. Saab came up with these changes, so I cant blame Toyota for that. Saab is not providing any solutions so maybe we have to figure it out on our own.
Auto makers make the decisions on how to comply with environmental regs and demmands for better mileage and lower emissions. Some choose to reengineer their powerplants, some choose the low cost route of just altering the existing plumbing a bit. It looks like we are seeing the effects of the latter. Look at the debates over the oil box/vent mods that Saab recommended in a TSB awhile back, lots of folks rushed to do this (I took a wait and see attitude) and now folks are saying it was not a good idea and are considering reversal.
But now that we have what we have, how do we best keep our engines in good shape over the long haul? Maybe we have to do an engine flush every 30k, I dont know. But as folks here continue to peer into their motors and share their findings, maybe we will find the answer.
