I just went thorugh the same decision

on my Old Blue '96 900SET with 122k. One of my sons ran it into the trailer hitch of a big SUV in slow freeway traffic. Ford SUV needed $0 repairs (small scratch on hitch ball). The Saab was economically totalled: it needed bumper cover, bumper rail, one headlight, one foglight, grill, intercooler (Viggen IC RIP) and hoses, radiator, A/C condenser, receiver/dryer, oil cooler, cooling fan, bumper mounts, assorted other bits, and some minor body shop and paint work.
I considered selling it for parts and replacing it with a used Japanese econobox for him for $3000 or so, but my son was willing to put some of his own money into to the project if we could get another Saab like Old Blue. He had walked away from a serious crash in a Saab (1987 900S) when he was six and we have been very brand loyal ever since. So our Saab budget was $4000.
What that budget, I asked Anders if Old Blue could be put back on the road. He worked out the parts bill, with new parts, would be $4-5000 but we figured with mostly used parts it could be quite a bit cheaper. Anders was just leaving for his recent trip back to Sweden, so he recommended his old boss's shop in Harbor City (Swedish Auto Clinic), who did the reconstruction job for under $3300 all in. Adding in the tow bill and a one-month Rent-A-Wreck rental, we were only about $50 over budget.
The advantage, besides the irrational sentimental attachment we have to old Saabs in my family, is that we have a car that is still a fairly well-known quantity - it has been carefully maintained for the last 70,000 miles of its life, and runs and handles well. I'd fix it again any time rather than buy a 10-yr-old Saab from a stranger if the cost were comparable.
But we each have to make our own decisions.
/Geoff
