In my experience, having owned new and used cars, there are a few good times to "get out." With a new car, it's usually in the first 2-3 years, as long as that model is still current. You can avoid the big-ticket repairs, maybe even still have some warranty left as a selling point. After that, it's all downhill.

With a used car (or a new car you've had for a while), a good time to sell is around 80-90k miles, provided you've kept up with maintenance and done scheduled service. Buyers usually get a bit spooked over 100k (I have never bought a car with more than 94K miles, and that was a Toyota P/U).

Once you're over 100k miles, the pace of repairs seems to speed up exponentially, and it's easy for me to get frustrated with things like ball joints, c/v boots, head gaskets etc. I get no pleasure in spending 1k just to pass inspection.

I usually sell cars when they have about 135-140k on them. As one poster pointed out, you are looking at about 3k in known repairs. If you can sell for $1,500, that's a budget of $4,500. If you go up to $6,000, you can find a 1997-98 900S or SE with 80-90k, and if you buy from SaabNet, it's likely that the car has been well maintained.

The way I see it, you're 70,000 or so miles ahead of where you are now for not much more money...
