I'm still getting used to that the 9-3 model is also on this board nowadays.
I have not heard or seen any problems with the balance shaft setup of these newer engines and I have not had the chance to tear into any 2002 and up engines yet.
I have seen though when replacing cylinder head bolts on the 2001 and older, that most of them have a more extended timing chain tensioner than I'm used to see on the older cars.
It seems to me that the newer engines are wearing out the timing chain and guides quicker than before and if that is all connected to the sludge issue or oil pump or whatever I cannot say.
Saab have also changed the maximum allowed extension of the tensioner from 11mm to 15mm. If that is because of a design change in how the guides are mounted or because the chain wear out quicker (within the time the car is under warranty), I don't know.
