Sporty cars that require speed-rated tires have stiff suspensions so they handle well. These cars require tires with similarly stiff sidewells (as well as heat resistance for the max speed). If you go below the rating of your OE tires, or what's reccomended by the mfg, and you take a corner real quick, your suspension could be hanging on too tight for the tires to hold the road, and you'll skid out. It's just that the suspension is tuned to work with certain tire characteristics, and if you deny it those characteristics, it can't do it's job of handling the car and responding to your maneuver's appropriately. It's a safety thing if you're doing a hard swerve to avoid something or taking a corner real quick.

This all applies much more so for the back tires than the front ones. In a turn, it's the rear tires that would fail and let the car out of control, because the front ones are turned the right way by the steering assembly. I have H on the front and V on the back of my 2001 SE, because I just bought the car and the dealer (whom i trust) put brand new tires on the front.

So, the moral of the story, is that if your son is buying 4 new tires, they should be V rated, and 205/50/16s, as those are the correct size and rating for the car. Z's will just cost more and aren't nessecary unless he's doing crazy madcap driving all the time, which it sounds like he isn't. I shudder to think what would have happened if my mom had incorrect tires on her 94 9000CSE the way I drove it when I was your son's age.

I've been looking into tires for when mine wear out, as they will quickly because they can't be rotated, and the best quality and values seem to be Toyos, either proxes TPT for an all season, or Proxes 4 if you're going to switch to winter tires, or Pirelli Zero Neros if you live somewhere fairly temperate and want to leave them on all season.

Best of luck,
Ethan
