Family has two '99 9-3s. The base model seemed to have more problems than the SE but we have had it longer as well. Both have ~100,000 miles. The best thing I can say is I have taken my 9-3 SE on long treks through the desert highways and not worried about the reliability at all. I have a spare DI cassette for trips where there are no service stations for hundreds of miles but have never needed it. To put a plug in on the 9-5, we purchased a used 9-5 at 60k and it has had zero problems for 30k. I would happily by either model again.
