I'm a bit late to this thread, but I had three classic 900s (82/87/88), a '95 900S previously and now have a '96 900SET and an '02 9-3SE. One of my grown-up sons is driving the 900SET with 130k and the 9-3, my daily driver, just rolled over 50k.
The cars are superficially very similar, but the 9-3 is in many ways (some subtle, some not so) a much more finished and "sophisticated" car: better handling, more power, better mpg, T7 vs T5, etc. But, they are both stages in the long evolution of a now-obsolete basic body that dates back to the early 1990s. [The C900s may be more SAAB-y to some but those cars are well into middle age now, so the DIY factor goes up.]
Before I got the 9-3SE, I had a new 2004 9-5 Aero for a year - that car was light years better than the other two in some ways, and I still miss it, but when it was repurchased by Saab (long story) after a year and I had their refund check in my hot little hand, I was hit by a hatchback nostaliga attack, and had the dealer find and CPO me a 2002 9-3SE, the last model year of the neo-classic hatchback body. When I sat in it, it just felt like home, rattles and all.
