Will,
I can only speak for my own 99 ( bought in 98) base 9-3. I got 170,000 miles out of it, I have been a saab owner since 1976. I have had the 96,99 several 900s and most recently the 9~3. I just got rid of it and bought Japanese- for a couple of reasons I needed more space being one. I will miss the get up and go that the 9~3 had. However in my honest opinion I will probably NOT by another saab again for a while. Just scroll down thru this blog and take a look at all the B.S. problems people have with so called new and improved saabs. This appears to be nothing more than rebadged GM.

Safty cages, crush zones, front wheel drive and erganomics- well Just about everyone has that in their cars now right down to a honda civic at half the price and far better reliability, along with cost of ownership. ANd it will actually be worth something with over 100K on it. Again in my honest opinion the gap of saab uniqueness and "the other cars" has been severely shortened.
For years I spoke and argued the merits of saab vs BMW, Volvo, MB, & anything american.

My favorite at the time that fuled such debate was my 1986 saab 900s, other than wipers, light bulbs & a muffler every 80K miles- nothing really went wrong with it. I sheepishly traded it in for $1000 with 330,000 miles on it- I bought it 13000 in 86- it was still running great. The 9-3 although somewhat reliable- the friggin DIC went at 120, flex pipe at 60K almost on the nose. and thats every 60K. surpintine belt of course went at 10:00 PM in feburary. Control module for airbags, cabin fan control modual and a host of other petty overengineered BS. I'm not saying you'll have all of these issues- keep your wallet full if you do. But I believe a lot of this is GM desire to build a cheap car and the swedes who wish to build modern engineering marvel.

Have a look down thru this message board at all the little problems- my guess is there really isn't an answer to your question of what year.

In the meantime I'll sit back and await for everyone to blast me how wrong I am or that what I experienced isn't typical. I took very good care of my car mechanical and driving wise too.

EJH
