Eric has it right. Use only 3m spray type adhesive, simply the best.
I redid mine on my Audi. The cost of the headliner material was under $90 and the supplier (local interior shop) had many types and colors to choose from. I redid the gluing and install myself which saved $$ and didn't take that long...
It is quite a chore to get the headliner material stretched and laying correctly. In addition do NOT put too much adhesive on the new headliner. Take your time because you will always (in the back of your mind) notice that one spot that you messed up, I speak from experience...
Derek, if you are not that handy, my suggestion would be to just unistall the headliner backer board and have a competant shop do the work.
