Should I switch to synthetic??

I just got my wife a new 9-5 Aero, gave one of my sons my '95 900, and inherited my wife's 2000 9-3 SE (HOT). My wife and I put no more than 4500-5000 miles per year on each car. The 2000 that I'm driving now has 38,000 miles on on the odometer and I've only used dino oil in it. I change oil three times a year and only have about 1500 miles between oil changes. About 2 1/2 years ago, the dealer replaced a faulty head gasket under warranty and remarked that there was absolutely no sludge issue when they got everything apart.
I've been thinking about a changeover to synthetic and if I do, I'd still change oil twice a year. My concern about this is the potential for oil leaks. Has anyone encountered such an issue? Also, if I would make the changeover, is there anything else to be done other than just doing an oil change? Is there a problem with any residual dino oil that will be left in the system after the changeover? The new 9-5 calls for Mobil I 0-W-40. Would that viscosity work with the 2000 9-3?
Thanks,
Steve
