Besides what the others have said, 0W-40 is a dual rated oil, meaning it meets operating requirements for both gasoline AND diesel engines. Saab has traditionally spec'd dual-rated oils for its Euro-sold cars, where engine life holds a top spot for consumers. The compression ignition of diesels is more demanding of the oil & generates more contamination & abrasives for it to deal with. In order to handle these conditions, an oil must be more durable & protective. ACEA A3/B3/B4 handles everything, & Group IV (PAO) synthetic does it best.
Unfortunately, API/ILSAC oil classifications tend to be weighted towards manufacturers' desires ("green credits," or continuing to lower amounts of protective phosphorous, as examples) rather than towards consumers' concerns.
You can easily use up all that oil you bought, & still get decent protection, by adding one or two quarts of ACEA A3/B3/B4 Group IV oil to each oil change. I'd recommend Mobil 1 EP 15W-50 or Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40. Amsoil's comparable oils would also be highly recommended.
