It's quite possible that 5W30 and 0W40 are both equally good for most 4-cyl Saabs driven on this board, so long as the oil you use has the ACEA A3 spec. Some here like the 0W40 better since it supposedly gives better cold starts, so your choice might be dependent on your climate. What does your manual say?
It's also true that Saab currently (in the wake of the sludge catastrophe) only specs the heavier 40 weight oil in its newer cars. All these Saab 4-cyl engines, with the exception of the new GM 2.0, all share a very similar architecture. That leaves open the possibility that the *only* difference here is whether or not you can sleep at night putting something else into your engine. It's entirely possible that you could run something else for 250K and never have a problem.
0W40 weights with the appropriate specs are popular on this board because many people have had good experiences with them.
I'm no expert, I just spend a lot of time trolling here.
