2002 9-3SE Rattling Noise from Engine

My dad called today to let me know his 9-3 has developed an issue... it rattles. I went up to take a look at it, but couldn't make any real determination. It's a loud rattle, almost a clanging sound. It seems to be coming from the physical front of the engine bay, near the AC compressor & water pump. It does not happen all the time - it starts and stops. It varies with engine speed. It doesn't change when the AC is on or off. When I put a screwdriver on the various accessories to listen, I couldn't clearly tell whether it was coming from the AC compressor or water pump, but I think if anything it's one of those two, almost certainly not the power steering pump. There is no play/wobble in the compressor pulley; there is *slight* wobble in the water pump (like 1mm or so).

I have never heard a bad water pump rattle. It sounds like a noise a dying AC compressor would make. The car doesn't run warm, the AC works great. It doesn't matter whether the car is moving or not.

Anyone have any advice or thoughts?
