Yeah - I'm pretty baffled at the moment. I agree that it's unlikely the water pump (or power steering pump) would make such a noise. When it was first described to me, I was certain it was the AC compressor, but now I'm not so sure. The fact that it doesn't change behavior when the AC is on blows my mind. :)
Latest feedback is:
"It "rattles" only at low RPMs, load or not. At highway speed I heard
nothing. In crawling traffic, when it rattles, turning the A/C or or
off only affects the rattle secondarily, i.e., the changed engine
speed causes the rattle to fade away to get a tiny bit louder; it
does not stop or make the rattle much louder."
I'm inclined to just let it go for now till something explodes.
Any chance it could be the turbo? Every turbo I've ever seen in a failure mode makes a scraping sound. The car doesn't use any fluids, never smokes, and does everything it's supposed to do. No CEL or anything like that.
