VERY important point about alternator mount Posted by Nicholas [Email] (#2995) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Nicholas) on Thu, 4 Aug 2011 12:14:25 In Reply to: Re: That's a lot to digest., Nicholas [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 4 Aug 2011 12:07:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Sorry about the double. Was trying to add for anyone reading this in future. Don't do what I did and go "routine" on the 8mm bolt removal.
These alternator bolts can be fairly tight, and the bottom is nearly impossible to lube up with PB blaster. You can get the top with a lot of wrangling, but the threads are only on the opposite end of the bolt.
In short, make sure you have good purchase on the bolt and do NOT torque hard enough to strip. Keep torching and do whatever you must to make those bolts come out without stripping the heads out. If you strip the heads out for any reason you are in for a weeks long alternator job from hell or worse - just like my story here.
