Many folks change there own brake components. It is one of the potentially high dollar areas where you can do the work your self and cut the parts costs in half at least.
And if you are doing the work your self, then going after some hi performance parts is a reasonable thing to do, as you have reduced your cost base significantly.
I have over 115000 miles on my original front rotors and pads. I am looking at geting new front pads in a couple of years.
One of the secrets of long brake component life is cleaning and lubrication. But if you are doing that and removing pads to do this, then you can slip in new ones if needed for just the cost of the pads.
Rotors do not need to be machined every time. But if owned a brake shop, would I want to machine the rotors so that they would be too thin on the next visit? When you do your own work, when you think that the rotors need to be machined, you can fit new ones for a modest price. Considering what is would cost to take them to a shop to be machined, the differential to new ones does not make sense.
