dead DI cassette ?s

I've owned a '95 SET (conv) with 73k mi. for something like 20 days now, and the DI cassette has failed already (no stuttering/warning that I could tell, just wouldn't start 1 hr. after I got to work). After some calling around, I did find a mechanic who helped me diagnose over the phone and loaned me a DI cassette from his shop to test, so I consider myself lucky for that.
2 thoughts/questions for the musing of the assembled:
Now when I pulled the bum DI, I notice that it has the older of the 2 'red' series P/N (9134404). I believed that the '95 were built with the 9178955 part which supercedes (and one would assume is more reliable) the 404. Am I right in suspecting that this DI is not original (and then a question as to why/how with a relatively young car...)?
Also, is there any point in trying to refurb the dead 9134404 to have a spare? I plan to buy a new DI and hope that the factory part has some warranty itself, but a standby to avoid stranding/tows seems worth a few bucks).
