With regard to only changing pads, definitely remove the guide pins only. It takes a LOT less torque to remove the guide bolts compared to the bracket bolts. Plus with the pins removed you can clean all the gunk off them and lubricate with silicone grease. Also, I think it also takes less time to remove the pads. Last time I was at the track it only took me 30 minutes to remove the very warm track pads and replace with the street pads
That said, I did bugger up the threads on one of the pins the first time I replaced pads. Now I have the "feel" and can tell when the very course threads are properly lined up. A good way to learn this is to rotate the pin as if you were removing the pin. When the pin moves out and then back toward the threaded hole, you know you just passed the thread engagement point.
Just another working option.
