The reason for the discrepancy is that you're filling up with several gallons left in the tank when the needle is near "E". If you go by the SID's DTE (distance to empty) value, you need to know that there is a correction applied to this calculation. I've seen some cars where you pump 17.5 gallons into the tank when the DTE is in the single digits and others where you pump 15 gallons for the same DTE value. The correction value can be changed by Tech II (EVERYTHING can be changed by Tech II) such that it will read closer to bone dry if you want. Basically, with the Tech II you could make the gas gauge always read FULL or always read empty! (What a nasty practical joke that would be ;-)
