Well, if it's the bushing, you don't get to reverse. It just disappears, and you'd only be able to find 3 and 4 reliably. There's a slim chance the linkage is damaged or bent -- this was the case for me. A new linkage made all my grinding/possing problems go away...but mine wasn't this bad. My would only grind going in, and pop randomly when in gear, but never grind letting out the clutch.
I kind of confirmed linkage by fiddling with the shift shaft at the transmission when it was in reverse; I was able to get a better 'click' by hand than with the gearshift, so something had to be wrong upstream.
