About to be laid off so very cash conscious. Brought my '96 900 SETC (50k miles) in for an oil change to the Saab dealer that I bought it from in November (used) and was told the following (MY QUESTIONS ARE IN CAPS FOLLOWING THE 3 PROBLEMS LISTED):
1) My front brakes have 5% remaining and that it would be $511 for new front brakes. SHOULDN'T THIS BREAK PROBLEM HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED BY THE INDIE SAAB MECHANIC I BROUGHT IT TO FOR INSPECTION BEFORE I BOUGHT IT JUST 4 MONTHS AGO? REGARDLESS, I BELIEVE IT IS JUST THE PADS THAT NEED REPLACING NOT THE WHOLE THING. INDIE SAAB MECHANIC SAID JUST THE PADS WOULD BE $180. ALTERNATIVELY, IS THERE ANY CRIME IN JUST BRINGING IT TO A MIDAS OR SOMEPLACE SIMILAR? I'M SURE IT WOULD BE EVEN CHEAPER THAN $180. ANY THOUGHTS?
2) Power steering hose (the long one that runs the entire length of the front end of the car ) is leaking and needs to be replaced $195 parts and $396 labor. PRETTY SURE IT IS NOT LEAKING THAT BADLY. INDIE SAAB MECHANIC TOLD ME I COULD PROBABLY BUY TIME BEFORE HAVING TO FIX IT BY JUST KEEPING AN EYE ON THE FLUID LEVEL AND REPLENISHING AS NEEDED. ANY CONCERN IN DOING THIS?
3) Clutch is getting stiff and will need to be replaced soon $700+. I THINK THE CLUTCH FEELS THE SAME AS THE DAY I BOUGHT IT 4 MONTHS AGO. INDIE SAAB MECHANIC THAT INSPECTED IT 4 MONTHS AGO NEVER SAID ANYTHING. CAN A CLUTCH GO IN JUST 4 MONTHS? ANY OPTIONS FOR A CHEAPER FIX?
