Coolant Discussion (Last Time...Promise) Kinda Long Posted by Saabster [Email] (#2456) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Saabster) on Mon, 1 Apr 2002 10:55:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi all,
I started a coolant discussion recently and did some follow-up research since then. The previous thread link is below. I have visited just about every Manufacturer and Gear-head site out there and reached my own conclusions. Again it all boils down to personal preference. As I stated in my previous posting, my car has had EG coolant (Green stuff) in it from about 30k miles. (About to cross 100k) It may have had it from day 1. I have had no coolant issues, which is my first point. I always want the best for the old girl as most everyone does for their own rides. I plan on keeping it for years to come as I have invested quite an amount in modifications, and more to come soon. I also did some research on water types, and the issue of distilled water is more of a recommendation for European applications due to water hardness. USA water is, for the most part, "softer" thus having less bad stuff. (Interpretation) I have also called around to respected local Saab repair garages, and have been told that EG coolant is more than adequate. Most include an additive when a flush service has been performed, mine included. I'm not sure of the additive's purpose, but I assume it's chemical in nature and since I'm not a Chemical Engineer I'll let it go as being what it is. (Good not bad) The Motor-head sites recommend that if you currently have EG coolant to not switch to PG coolants, even after a thorough flushing. Basically if it ain't broke, don't fix it. (Another interpretation) I am a list maker when it comes to hard decisions to make. My list at the the end of this dilemma weighed very heavily on the "PRO" side of the EG vs. PG coolant issue. The "CON" side of the list was very short actually. (PRO = EG positive) My final decision after all this is to stick with the green stuff. I plan on installing my Viggen Intercooler this week, so after the draining of the radiator I plan of refreshing the cooling system with Prestone or equal along with the additive to remain an EG coolant user. A call today to my repair guy is also pertinent. His comment... "Dexcool or any other PG coolant is junk". That'll open up an entirely new can of worms. :)
Thanks for you ears. I'd love some feed-back as long as it's not flaming. (GRIN)
