I'm in the car business and when I sold new cars a week didn't go by that we didn't get a customer in the same situation as you. The conversation always began with "I have to spend X on my car, so I'd like to buy a new car." But the ultimate irony is that getting the new car always cost at least 20 times what X was, but they somehow saw that as the cheap way out. How much do you think it would cost to get your car to run another 100,000 miles? Would it cost $25,000 plus five years of interest? That's about what it will cost to buy a new car. You could put a new engine ($3-4K) in your car, a new transmission (3k), a paint job, new interior, new alloys and tires, and still get change back from a $10,000 bill. The real question is how much $25,000 means to you. Are you going to simply write a check for it? Then by all means go for it, you can obviously afford it. Are you going to work hard and sweat every payment? Then maybe you should think twice. About the time (60 months)you get it paid off, your investment will be worth about what a five year old 900 is worth ($8,000.?) On the other hand, think if you kept your car and invested $350 a month for the next five years. You could pay cash for your next car (used if you're smart) and have money left over.
