I agree that there is a limit to how long it makes sense to keep a car and you sound like you're getting plenty of bang for the buck on your cars compared to most people I see. But it's also easy to fall into what I call the "long trip myth." It's this notion that your car has to a capable of driving to California (or Maine) at a moments notice. The fact is that few people ever really drive that far. When my cars get to the past 100,000 miles stage, if we go on a road trip we rent a brand new car. For as cheap as it is, it makes more sense than putting several thousand miles on your own car, even if it's a new one. I also tend to be very protective and worried about my cars, but with a rental car I'll park it anywhere, who cares? And yeah, the possibility of a break--down somewhere unpleasant exists, with a little preparation (a cell phone, AAA membership, phone numbers for towing and repair, etc.) it's not the end of the world. You can't beleive the thousands upon thousands of dollars people spend to avoid a tow truck ride. Hell it would probably be cheaper to keep a chaufeur on retainer for breakdowns than buy a new car every 3 or 4 years.
