What's up with the timing/balance chain ? Posted by Peter [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Next weekend I am going to look at a car...
'96 900S 2.3L NA engine
automatic tranny
55k miles on the clock
So I've been reading this board for the past couple of days.
First of all, it reminds me of the good-ol-days when I had my '84 900T.
I've seen several references to problems with the timing/balance chain in the 94-97 cars. Can somebody please tell me which engines are affected by this problem, and what I should look for.
The car is being sold by my old mechanic -- an indie shop who did all the work on my '84 900T when I lived in upstate, NY. He bought the car at a dealer auction, and just did the 60k service on the car. He's asking $8900 for it. I trust him as a mechanic, and I know that he would not steer me wrong. But the car is actually for my sister, and it's a large amount of money to spend without a warranty. If the car is as reliable as my '84 was, then I would have no reservations about letting my sister drive it. But now I'm concerned about the timing chain issue. I always thought that the timing chain is one of the things that makes these cars so durable for so many miles.
Can somebody please enlighten me?
I love this forum!
Thanks,
Peter
