I am checking out this car on Saturday. It is at the mechanic's shop where I had my '84 serviced. (He bought it at auction and is selling it.)
It's a 3 hour drive to get there, so unfortunately I can't use him for regular service. (Otherwise I'd probably still have my '84 900T.)

Would it be possible to have him pull the oil pump screen, or to look at the timing belt tensioners or balance shaft without doing any major work to the vehicle? He told me that he did the service on the car after he took it home from the auction, and it is in good shape. (Plus he also inspected it at the auction before he bought it.) So I can be relatively assured that the major components of the car are in good shape. But I don't know if he would have inspected these items. What is reasonable to ask him to inspect before we make a purchse? What should we look for?

Also, this car is a '96 with only 55k miles on it. I have no idea what the service history was like for the first 55k miles. But I can certainly flush the engine and start using synthetic in it from this point forward.

I am trying to be rational about this purchase, since my sister is a penniless grad student. But I cannot help being excited about getting another Saab in the family! :-)
I'm just wondering if a slightly older Accord/Camry might be a better car for my sister's needs.

(She is NOT an enthusiast. I would probably have to remind her to change the oil, and I'd have to buy the synthetic for her. That's fine, because with two turbo Audis in the family, I'll just buy Mobil1 or Amsoil by the case for all three cars.)

Incidentally, does the 2.3L N/A engine require premium fuel? Or can my sister use 89octane?

Thanks again!!

Cheers,
Peter
