Yes that is possible, the checkvalve is an extremely simple design with a plastic housing and a plastic (or maybe) rubber ball inside with a soft spring behind resting on a seat.
When fuel pump is running it pushes the ball up further into housing and allow gasolin to pass by, as soon as the pump stops, the ball is pushed back onto its seat and stops the backflow.
It doesn't happens too often that it fails, but it could.
