I'm still a novice, so bare with me. After a long road trip (10 hours) and an immediate shutdown after arrival, the Turbo blew a seal. The next time it was driven, the turbo sent oil into the exhaust, which was billowing smokescreens at other motorists. A friend had the car at the time. He and his rommate are both automotive engineers and hobbyist mechanics. So I lucked out on having able-bodied car nuts to work on this.
After scrambling for parts and time to do the work, we replaced the turbo over the past few days (new sparkplugs, too). We went for test drives this morning and smoked out everyone and everything around us. After an hour city/country drive this morning, it eventually calmed down and is just kicking out occasional puffs of smoke. First question - how long could the old oil expect to be burning in the exhaust system before it all burns away? As far as I know, I'm not burning current oil. Oil levels have stayed steady and no obvious leaks.
Next issues - when stopped and idling, it chokes out and sounds like it's about to stall before it recovers. In general, there are strange jerking and smoothness issues. There appeared to be a dark spot on the underside of the catalytic converter - perhaps a puddle of oil left from the turbo destruction that hasn't evaporated? Does this mean anything about the health of the cat converter? I already purchased an O2 sensor and should receive it in a few days. I don't know if it was ever replaced in the past, so now seems like an appropriate time to put a new one on. Any advice on checking the catalytic converter? If I put the O2 sensor in and everything is back to normal, I'd expect that would answer my question, but I'm just looking for a heads up on issues with this sort of damage and repair.
