"The reason your car only took 1 gallon of coolant is the thermostat."
said Vlad above. Wrong there Vlad. The reason it only took 1 gallon to fill is that when you drain from the lower coolant hose or radiator drain only one gallon comes out. So it is hard to get more than one gallon back in. (Quantities are approximate.) But the full system capacity is more like two gallons. So a coolant exchange done that way is only half a job at best. And other problems can result from this process.
There are issues here to coolant changing that none of the above posts have addressed. As a full-time professional I am sad to see you folks risking your beloved rides by acting on each other's uninformed recommendations. Obviously few or none of you will bring them to me for service, I say that to validate that my interest is not to get your business myself, but to help you do good maintenance (as you want to do); and not to say that only I or my professional colleagues can do this right. You too maybe can, but regretfully I don't get the impression that you will learn how by following the recommendations of the foregoing posts. The advice I see there only invites problems.
