I just did it last fall, so no analysis results yet. I am holding my fingers crossed.
With Mobil 1 10W-30 I was getting excellent wear numbers with 10k change intervals. I switched to 10W-40 non-synthetic for a short run and immediately picked up about 10% better fuel mileage. Engine ran noticeably smoother and quieter. I now run Lubro Moly 5W-40 full synthetic and love the silky smooth engine and reduced fuel consumption. Others have commented on improving their mileage and overall better running engine after switching from xW-30 to xW-40 motor oil.
The heavier oil must be improving the friction variable in the fuel economy equation enough to overcome any pumping losses due to increased viscosity. Before automatically assuming that a lighter weight oil like 0W-30 will improve fuel economy, I would advise any one with a NG900 try a good xW-40 oil too. You may be pleasantly surprised!
BTW, my mom's Subaru Impreza seems to like xW-40 oil *much* better, too.
