The heavier weight oils are needed in the summer to counter the thinning out on hot days. Coversely, the lighter weight oils flow better in the cold. Overall, olls with less variable viscosity last longer between changes. It's actually the waxes and other additives put in the oil to give the viscocity range that break down first. The greater the range from low to high, the faster the oil will deteriorate in use.

If you know you'll be operating in cold temperatures, choose 5w-30. In the summer, 10w30, or 20w40 are probably a better choices.
