The fan intermitently worked when the engine was running but seemed to work more often without. Eventually nothing worked. A burning electrical smell was present before this happened. I drove my '97 900 SE for a year without heat/ac. Finally I caved and brought it in to the dealer. First a module under the glove box was replaced.. still no fan. Then they dug deeper and looked at the blower motor itself. The wiring harness was melted, however they didn't have the correct part to replaced it correctly and offered to rig something up. I wanted it serviced correctly so waited till the part came in. When the part did come in they had to take the wipers off, etc again to fix the harness. After the fix, still no fan! At this point I was frustrated and the only thing left to replace was the blower motor itself and they wanted just under $500 for the part.. so I refused. fixing the wiring harness came to $180 (mostly labor). Grrr. A few months later I purchased a blower motor from Eeuroparts.com ($239.50) and replace the old one myself. Voila! The fan works. (BTW, this would have been a great time to replace the cabin filter as it sits just above the blower motor) The old blower motor has a positive and negative magnet clipped in and holds their tension agains the shaft with 2 small springs. One spring had rusted off and may have caused the melting. It wasn't till a few months ago that I replaced the spring and voila, just like new! If I had been more knowledgable at the time I would have saved time and money and would not have to purchase a new blower motor. This may or may not apply to you but hopefully will give insight for things to look for.
